One of the most common questions we’re asked here at Calido is, “How much firewood do I actually need?" The honest answer is, it depends on your log burner, how often you burn and how much space you have to store logs.
Whether you’re lighting the fire occasionally or relying on it daily throughout winter, this guide will help you choose the right quantity and format of firewood for your home.
How often do you burn firewood
Occasional firewood burning
If you light the stove at weekends or on particularly cold evenings, you could consider nets of firewood or a standard crate. Nets of kiln dried logs are easy to store, quick to carry and suited to users who have limited storage space.
Regular firewood burning
For households using their log burner most evenings, a bulk delivery is far more cost-effective. A bulk bag or crate ensures you always have dry logs ready to go, without the need for frequent re-ordering.
Primary heat source
If your wood burner is your main source of heat, you’ll need a larger, consistent supply. Many of our customers opt for our largest crates or pallets of 40 or 56 nets, which see them through the season, topping up with smaller quantities if needed.
Firewood storage space
One of the most important deciding factors is where you’ll store your logs. Kiln dried logs need to be protected from the elements; a little surface water is fine, but to avoid impacting the quality of your logs and their burn, they should be protected from the rain whilst maintaining good airflow.
Limited storage
If you’re tight on space, net bags are a great option. They’re ideal for small sheds or storage areas and can be stacked directly into log baskets.
Outdoor storage available
If you have a log store, shed or covered area outside, bulk bags or crates are the most economical option. Kiln dried logs arrive ready to burn and will continue to provide maximum heat when kept dry and ventilated.Plan ahead for colder months
Firewood demand always rises sharply in winter. Ordering earlier in the season helps avoid shortages and means you can seasonally budget your fuel spend.
