Why Won’t My Stove Light Properly? Understanding Autumn Chimney Syndrome

As autumn sets in and many of us begin lighting our stoves again, you might notice something unusual: instead of smoke rising neatly up the chimney, it drifts back into the room. If this happens, don’t worry - you’re not alone. It could be down to Autumn Chimney Syndrome, which often catches stove owners out at this time of year.

What Is Autumn Chimney Syndrome?

Normally, warm air inside your home rises up the flue, pulling smoke with it. But in autumn, the outside air can sometimes be warmer than the air indoors. When that happens, airflow reverses.

The colder, heavier air inside your chimney creates a stubborn “plug” that stops smoke from escaping. Instead of a roaring fire, you’re left with smoke backing up into your living room.

How to Fix the Problem

Luckily, there are some simple tricks to beat Autumn Chimney Syndrome and get your stove working properly again.

Quick Fixes

  • Use natural firelighters (not newspaper) – they burn hotter and cleaner.

  • Build your fire gradually – start with kindling and small kiln dried logs before adding larger ones.

  • Leave the stove door slightly open until the fire is established.

  • Open a window or door briefly to create extra draught if needed.

Safety First

Sometimes, quick fixes aren’t enough. If smoke keeps flooding back into the room, stop and let the air clear. Never try to burn through it.

Persistent problems could mean it’s time to have your chimney swept or book a professional stove service. Regular maintenance is the best way to prevent ongoing issues and keep your stove safe and efficient.

If you are looking for a chimney sweep local to you, we recommend using the NACS Chimney Sweep directory.

Autumn Chimney Syndrome is frustrating but temporary and with the right approach, it’s easy to manage. Building your fire carefully, using quality kiln dried firewood, and ensuring your chimney is well-maintained will help you enjoy a clear, efficient burn all season long.

At Calido, we not only supply the best stove fuel – from kiln dried logs to briquettes – but also stock a wide range of Ecodesign stoves and DEFRA stoves Scotland approved models designed to burn cleanly and efficiently.
