Firewood Questions
We have four different types of briquettes to buy – Calido Wood briquettes, Calido Fire Log briquettes, Calido Eco Log briquettes and Calido Pini-Kay briquettes.
Calido Wood briquettes are made from softwood and have no glues or resins added to them in the production process. They come in a pack of FIVE and are a round shaped briquette.
Calido Fire Log briquettes are also made from softwood, but have a small amount of lignin in them to help them bind (lignin is a organic substance found naturally in the cells of plants and trees). They are a square shaped briquette and come in a pack of six.
Calido Eco Log briquettes are made from hardwood, but may have a small amount of softwood in them. There are no resins or glues added to them in the production process. They come in a pack of six and are a round briquette.
Calido Pini-Kay briquettes are made from a mixture of hardwood and softwood. They are an octagonal shape and come in a pack of twelve. There are no glues or resins added in the production process.
They are all produced in a similar way in a heat press, the only difference is that the Calido Fire Logs have added lignin to help hold the square shape.
All the briquettes with the exception of the Calido Pini Kays, are easy to break and will expand when burning. The pini kays hold their shape and are more difficult to break.
All the briquettes can be used in both a wood only and multifuel stove and are also ideal for outdoor burners, chimineas and firepits. The Calido Pini Kays are particularly good for fuelling Wood Fired Hot Tub burners.
We sell three different species of logs – Birch, Ash and Oak. All the logs are kiln dried hardwood and they are Ready To Burn accredited.
Birch is one of our best sellers! Birch logs burn with a lovely bright flame and is ideal for modern cylindrical type stoves. It lights easily and is ideal to get your fire going with a good heat output. We sell the birch in crates and net bags.
Ash is a similar species of log to birch, but with a slightly longer burn time. It lights easily, burns with a bright flame and offers a steady heat output. The ash, along with the birch, are our two most popular types of logs. We sell the ash in crates and nets bags.
Oak is our premium log species, with the longest burn time as it’s the most dense. Oak doesn’t catch as easily as birch or ash, so you are better starting your fire with one of these and burning the oak once a bed of embers has established in your stove. It produces a flame initially and reduces to a glow after a period of time. We sell the oak in net bags and crates.
We no longer stock Alder. It’s one of the “softer” hardwood logs and when compared to Birch, it costs more per kwh of heat produced, so we decided to discontinue it as it doesn’t provide good value for money for our customers.
Stove Questions
Within reason any property may be suitable irrespective of whether a chimney is present. In most properties without an existing chimney a system chimney may be installed as opposed to building a new masonry chimney and may run within the property or externally providing it is safe to do so.
If this is something you are concerned about then don’t hesitate to get in touch today with our team at Calido, one of our friendly and advisable team members would be more than happy to help.
Lighting your stove in the most effective way could take a little bit of practise, especially if you have never lit one before.
Below we’ve listed a simple step by step guide on lighting a fire…
- Fully open the primary air vent/control and air wash controls
- Place a firelighter or scrunched up newspaper together with some dry kindling wood on the grate, then light the firelighter or paper
- Leave the door slightly ajar while the fire establishes, and the glass warms up
- Once the fire is going, add some larger pieces of wood. It’s important to not fill the chamber with logs
- When the logs have caught flame and the fire is fully establishes, close the door and then the primary air control completely
- Use the air wash to control the burn rate when the appliance is at operating temperature
- Maintain the fire frequently with small amounts of additional fuel
It is ALWAYS important that the room in which a stove is installed in has ventilation. This ensures an adequate amount of air for combustion to prevent any overheating and the efficiency operation of any flue. There are many ways of providing combustion ventilation, this is something one of our friendly team members will be more than happy to help you with this.
